From our Emergency Management Partners:
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Lake and surrounding counties for today through Friday morning. "A strong storm system across the central Rockies will approach northern Illinois and northwest Indiana through early Friday. Several periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected today and tonight with a potential for rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts." Heavier pockets of rain are possible if thunderstorm lines form and allow repetitive impacts over the same area. There is a chance of thunderstorms or hail later today and tonight.
Rain or rain mixed with some snow is expected to continue off and on Friday and Saturday, with the precipitation forecast to move out of our area on Sunday. No additional precipitati on i s currentl y forecast through next week, but forecasts can change with time.
The Weather Service has also issued or continued flood warnings for the Des Plaines River at Russell and Gurnee, as well as the Fox River at New Munster (Wisconsin). Rain today and tonight will cause a rise in stream and river levels, and may also cause inflows to the Chain of Lakes to exceed outflows again, leading to rising water on the lakes. The lower Fox River has been closed by the Fox Waterway agency and IDNR because of hazardous high water and debris, and other sections of the Fox and Chain are restricted to a no-wake zone. The Des Plaines River remains closed because of hazardous flood conditions.
Lake County and partner units of government are coordinating flood response activities, such as the distribution of sand and sandbags.
Very heavy rain this afternoon and evening may lead to standing water on roads and streets, potentially causing widespread tra ffic problems. nbsp;Motorists should be cautious and avoid driving through swiftly flowing water or deep standing water.
