Sterling Lake - Lake County, IL

Here are some photos from a quick paddle at Sterling Lake in Van Patten Woods near the Illinois-Wisconsin border. There were several other kayakers out on the lake today including a father and 2 daughters aged 9 and 11. When I first noticed them from across the lake I saw that there were 2 peop...

2008 DesPlaines River Canoe Marathon

What a fun race, I'm definitely doing this again next year! I started off late due to the shuttle bus taking longer than expected and as such I was the last person to enter the race. The last heat started probably 10-15 minutes before I did and it took me a whopping 30-45 minutes to catch up to ...

Re: Video_humor

All those boats sound pretty good, particularly the Valley Avocet for $1800. At least with fiberglass you can always repair scratches with some epoxy and sanding. As I'm finding out, seems most paddlers eventually buy several boats to match the different types of water. Since they are so cheap, m...

Re: Video_humor

You are living in one of the prime kayaking sections in Illinois, we'll definitely have to make some trips down by you this year. Hennepin canal, Covel Creek and Vermilion are all on my wish list. What boats are you looking at? I was looking at Wilderness Systems' Tempest 170, and a Valley Aquana...

Re: Video_humor

Yeah, that was a nicely done re-enter and roll. I've read that after a wet exit in rough waters it should be your primary self-rescue technique since it is so quick. Other slower techniques leave you open to being dumped again. Once it warms up we should spend a day on Lake Michigan practicing ...

Re: Winter swimming in Lake Champlain

After a brief discussion/debate with my friend Joe (and a possible cold water immersion contest as the result), below is a quote from an article he sent me on a super human that can withstand immersion in ice water for 1 hour and 12 minutes. """ "Wim Hof was very calm, very comf...

2007 Kishwaukee Season Opener with Prairie Coast Paddlers

Just recently saw that Dan of the Prairie Coast Paddlers will be hosting another Kishwaukee trip this April. This was an awesome trip last year and I thought I'd post some pics for anyone thinking about going. Water levels were fairly high and we had some fun in a couple riffles with eddys along ...

Answer: Mystery PDD photo

And the answer is................................ The picture is of the Des Plaines River, taken from the bridge just upstream of the Route 60 put-in. This relates to PDD since the Des Plaines River was one of the few places with flowing water during the ridiculously cold weather earlier this year...
