North Dupage West Branch

We canoed the northern 8 miles of the Dupage River West Branch in the first week of February. From St. Charles road to Mack road took almost two hours, given a few obstacles. I have yet to see the Dupage frozen over at any point this winter, and its been a cold one. This section of the river is best to canoe when the water is high, almost at flood level. Otherwise shallow, as when we ran it, there are quite a few spots where we ran aground or scraped hard. Most of the trip is quite forest preserve, although there are a few roads crossing and paralleling. Its also shielded from the wind because the banks are always wooded and it is a narrow river. Its a quick, fun trip.
