Cache River State Natural Area
| Cypress swamp and wetland containing record breaking aged cypress trees with massive flared bases. One is over 1000 years old and another is 850 years old. Wildlife in this area includes bald eagles, great horned owls, black vultures, bobcats, gray foxes, mink and many others (see link for full IDNR description).
Due to the slow river velocity, round trips of 3-6 miles without a shuttle are possible. You can also explore Eagle Pond which is owned by the Nature Conservancy. The canoe trail is marked with signs, arrows and yellow markers.
From the IDNR:
"Visitors can bring their own canoes and access the Lower Cache River from the Lower Cache River access located 1 3/4 miles west of IL Rt 37 on the Perks, IL road and then 1 mile south on gravel road."
Also check out the Lower Cache Canoe Fact Sheet for more info.
