Shabbona Lake State Park
Shabbona, IL

A quiet man-made lake which is a popular fishing spot, named after Chief Shabbona whose grave is located in the park. This put-in is by the boat rentals, there is also another boat launch on the north side of the lake in the campground area.

Update from Dave Watts, Aug 16, 2008:
The motor limit is 10hp, so the wakes in the bulk of the lake are not that bad. The 'no-wake' zone is a great place to nature watch, wildlife abounds, especially in early morning and evening. Of course one can always fish, which is what the lake is known for, but I've even seen sail boards out there on windy days. I've been going out there for years, have camped several times and fished/hiked often.

There are a couple of places to put-in/take-out, the main one is the public boat launch area (just be careful not to get in way of the boaters launching, they can get a little feisty) or the boat rental docks and the picnic area on the lake. I would suggest that canoeists/kayakers are able to self rescue since the lake is quite deep in parts. If one was to go alone, I would recommend staying within a safe distant to the shoreline as the lake is not patrolled by rescue personnel, but the boaters/fishermen are quite helpful in those types of situations (helping stranded boaters).
