Great put in - sandy beach. You'll need a cart if you have a heavy Kayak - but the paddle was awesome out there.

From Milwaukee County Parks:

"With dramatic bluffs to the north and south, and the glint of the sun on Lake Michigan, Bender Park's waterfront is a beautiful site. You'll be attracted to this new recreational development whether you're a boater or you simply want to enjoy the beauty of the lakefront.

You now have a six-lane boat launch, and a sand beach for launching your non-motorized watercraft or for wading into Lake Michigan. Hiking trails along the lakefront allow you to take in the beauty of nature. The waterfront pavilion provides restroom facilities for your convenience.

The entrance gate opens at 4:30am and is closed at 10pm. For more information, call the Grant Unit at at (414) 762-1550."

"Another of my favorite launch sites onto Lake MI with a bonus option to paddle up the Pike River. Pennoyer Park is a great wide-open space. A little further to carry to the water with a slight slope."

From RussJ at wi-paddlers.net

"A small public beach area in a nice wide open park which is adjacent to the marina. Best (nearest the water) parking is on the street. Protected by a small jetty, paddling to the southeast puts one in the open waters of Lake Michigan. For the non-paddling companions, there is a great waterfront walkway and the much talked about Kenosha Trolley. There are also a lot of neat little shops and the Kenosha Public Museum very nearby."

See link for a picture of the beach.

From RussJ at wi-paddlers.net:

"This is a great little beach in a residential neighborhood. During the swimming season, parking is often impossible here unless you come early in the morning. During the off-season, there is ample parking for a group which places you and your boats only a few yards from the water. The bottom is sandy and shallow for some distance from the waterfront. There are no restrooms available."

From Ken Nelson at wi-paddlers.net:
"This is a very nice spot. Russ and I paddled here and it's a great little beach with a short carry. Head to the South and you get to winthrop harbor and beyond that is IL State Beach. Some of the shoreline to the South is rocky and be sure to use caution passing through the entrance to Winthrop Harbor....lots of boats."

Illinois Beach State Park

During the summer, it is recommended to launch from the park office located on the small U-drive just past the resort. If it's windy, you'll likely see windsurfers launching from here, away from the main beach and away from the beach-goers. The only problem with this location is the limited parking.

As a second launch site, during the off season, you can launch from the main beach where there is a gigantic parking lot although the carry from the parking lot to the water is a long 75 yards or so.

Both put-ins can be reached by taking Wadsworth Rd. into the Illinois Beach State Park area and following it around until you pass Illinois Beach State Resort. You'll see the park office first and if you miss it you'll end up at the huge parking lot for the main part of the beach.

Update:
Kayaker Mary Ellen informs us that on July 19, 2011, within 5 minutes of arriving at the park the park ranger came out and informed her of a strong undertow and that swimming is strictly prohibited and that she and her father would not be allowed to swim or launch their kayaks. You have been warned!

From RussJ at wi-paddlers.net:

"A little used park squeezed in-between Abbott Labs and the Great Lakes Navy Base in North Chicago. Has a nice beach with parking only a few yards from the water. Paddling to the north will lead you towards the Waukegan Harbor, while paddling South will lead you to the Lake Bluff Beach. Use care if paddling south as the Navy base is a restricted area. Stay out on the open waters of the lake, outside of any marked areas when passing govt. property."

From the Lake Bluff Park District:
"Nestled at the base of a leafy green bluff, Sunrise Beach is a peaceful spot to while away a summer afternoon. In the warm months, the beach is home to the Park District's Learn to Sail programs and Sailing Camp. In the off season, it's a great place for a quiet walk along the water."

Description from Bruce @ wi-paddlers.net

"Last weekend, I found a new place to launch on Lake Michigan; the Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park. The parking fee is $5 (compared with $20 or $30 at Dempster St. in Evanston) per day for non-residents and a season parking pass is $64. The beach is not crowded and there are ramps for sailboats and motor boats; however the lake in that area is not congested with boats.

Paddling south for a few miles, there are many attractive bluffs with nice homes and interesting lakeside foliage."
